Join us for a conversation with one of the most fascinating figures in modern genre studies and filmmaking: author, director, programmer and producer Kier-La Janisse, to celebrate the 10th anniversary publication of a new expanded edition of her groundbreaking book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films (FAB Press). Both a stunning critique of the stereotype of the neurotic / hysterical woman in modern horror films and a highly personal autobiography, House of Psychotic Women became an instant classic on its initial release in 2012 and helped pave the way for a new generation of female film critics and historians to re-examine and re-interpret horror studies in dazzling and surprising ways. Founder of The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, Janisse is the author of A Violent Professional: The Films of Luciano Rossi (2007) and has been an editor on numerous books including Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive (2021), Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television (2017) and Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s (2015). She was a producer on David Gregory’s Tales of the Uncanny (2020) and wrote, directed and produced the award-winning documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021) for Severin Films, where she is a producer and editor of supplemental features. She is currently at work on several books including a monograph about Monte Hellman’s Cockfighter. For more see: kierlajanisse.com.

We’re thrilled to welcome Kier-La Janisse for this special conversation, moderated by PRS Executive Director Dennis Bartok. She will be signing copies of the new edition of “House of Psychotic Women” after the Q&A. We will also have limited copies of the new 5-disc Severin Films’s “House of Psychotic Women Rarities Collection” Blu-ray set for sale as well.

In-person and online Zoom ticket options available. Please email events@prs.org if you have any questions.
