HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN STRAND AT WEIRD WEEKEND
Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow
Oct 28-30th, 2022
Tickets on sale Friday 23/09
10 years ago, Kier-La Janisse published House of Psychotic Women, subtitled an “autobiographical topography of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films”. A ground-breaking mix of keen critical analysis and clear-eyed, compelling memoir, Janisse’s influential tome inspired a generation of critics, programmers and film-makers. The book has also played no small role in canonising a range of obscure, fringe and forgotten genre titles, many now considered essential.
To mark the book’s anniversary, we present a selection of films featured in Janisse’s book, all in brand-new restorations, some screening in the UK for the first time. The renowned writer, curator and director also joins us in person for a special In Conversation event, hosted by Anna Bogutskaya (The Final Girls).
*NOTE THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO THE TRAGIC SUDDEN CLOSURE OF FILMHOUSE AND THE EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. TICKETS FOR THE BROOD WILL BE HONORED AT THE GLASGOW EVENT, WEIRD WEEKEND (see above) WHERE THE FILM HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE PROGRAM IN LIGHT OF THIS.*

Disturbed teen Simone is a fantasist who spends much of her time writing fan letters to ‘R’, a Gary Numan-esque synth pop star. Every day she awaits the postman for a reply but one never comes. As her obsessive fandom intensifies, Simone resolves to meet her idol, tracking him down to the recording of a television special in Berlin. In her mind, if she can only make R aware of her devotion, then her love will be reciprocated and they’ll live happily ever after. Unfortunately when they finally meet, R treats Simone like every other doe-eyed groupie, sleeping with her before rejecting her. But Simone is not like the others, and when her dreams of love are shattered, her madness overflows in an explosion of violence. With a phenomenal central performance by Désirée Nosbusch, Der Fan is one of the most chilling portrayals of psychotic teenage obsession ever committed to film.

Widow Ruth is seven months pregnant when, believing herself to be guided by her unborn baby, she embarks on a homicidal rampage, dispatching anyone who stands in her way. An unexpectedly touching comedy of the blackest kind, filmed in Cardiff on a small budget whilst Lowe herself was pregnant is a modern classic.

A pitch black, wryly British comedy from the mind of Alice Lowe, Prevenge follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree. It’s her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth’s actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims. Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between redemption and destruction at the moment of motherhood.

Part divorce drama, part creature feature, part Cold War thriller, Possession is one of the most unsettling films of all time. With his marriage on the brink of collapse, Mark (Neill) tries desperately to cling on to his wife Anna (Adjani) as she indulges in her affairs with men… and other beings. Adjani’s commitment to her performance pushed her to her limits, and she is as magnetic as it is unhinged in the role of a woman on the verge of a cosmic breakdown. (Anna Bogutskaya)
